Practical training is the focus of undergraduate education at the faculty of technology. To produce technologists with extensive practical experience, it is critical to expose them to real-life work environments throughout their program of study. This dedicated administrative unit handles both short-term and long-term industrial placement of students, which can also assist the faculty in maintaining cordial relationships with industry partners.
About the Industrial Education & Training Center
The Industrial Education and Training Centre of the Faculty of Technology, General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, arrange Industrial Education programs, Industrial Training, On-site training, and field visits for Technology undergraduates. The 24 weeks Industrial Training placements are placed for third year (Semester 6) Technology undergraduates. On-site training and field visits are arranged based on the requirement of each module. Industrial Education programs are arranged with industrial partners. The Industrial Education & Training Centre is open from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM on weekdays.
INDUSTRIAL TRAINING
Industrial Training forms a compulsory element of the undergraduate curriculum at the Faculty of Technology. The Industrial Education and Training Centre (IETC) is responsible for arranging Industrial training in liaison with the National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority (NAITA). Placements in the participating industries are arranged for undergraduates during their sixth semester of studies so that a minimum of six months of training in industry is achieved. Undergraduates are expected to acquire hands on experience of the work, but also of related matters such as administration, accounting, management, safety etc. Students have to maintain a daily diary during training and submit a comprehensive report covering each period. The Head-IETC and panel of senior academics are being carried out field inspections during their training period. The assessment is done at a presentation and viva conducted by a panel of a practicing engineer from the industry, an officer from NAITA, and a senior lecturer from the relevant department. Every undergraduate has to successfully complete the Industrial Training Program as a requirement to qualify for the BET. (Hons) degree.
INDUSTRIAL EDUCATION
IETC combines industries helps to undergraduates develop their skills and character to meet vital social, economic and individual needs. Industrial education is also needed to acquire skills necessary for employment with the correct attitude and competitiveness. Ultimately, industrial education programs play an important role in the development of the quality of life of employees.
